God the Creator
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. (Part I)
Reading (Genesis 1: 1-5, 26-31)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was a void, and darkness covered the face of the deep. A mighty wind swept over the waters.
Then God said, "Let there be light."
And there was light. God saw that the light was good. God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day and the darkness Night. And evening came, and then morning, the first day....
Then God said, "Let us make man in our own image."
And God created man in his image, in the divine image he created him, male and female he created them. God blessed them, saying, "Be fertile and multiply. Fill the earth."
God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good.
Song (Psalm 95)
Come, let us sing to the Lord,
Shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.
For the Lord is a great God,
And a great king above all gods.
In his hands are the depths of the earth,
And the highest mountains as well.
The sea is his, for he made it,
And the dry land, which his hands have formed.
O come, let us bow down and worship,
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,
And we are his people,
The sheep of his flock.
Reflection
All faith begins with this fundamental truth: that God is the creator of all things. Everything that is comes from God. Everything that is was once nothing, and was called out of nothingness into being. Everything owes its existence to God. This truth is at the heart of all things.
But modern man has all but given up believing in God. Most of the time we live our lives as though there were no God, regardless of what we profess. We carry on our everyday affairs with seldom a thought of God. We are unaware that the life we carry within us is a fragile miracle that is sustained at every moment by the Creator.
But at unexpected times the reality of God forces itself into our consciousness. We experience a tension between faith and unbelief. We cannot comprehend the Lord God; we cannot understand his ways. When we have exhausted our human powers in trying to grasp the wonders of creation, we are left in silence and awe. We bow down before the majesty of the Creator and worship him.
Prayer
Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, you called us out of nothingness, and you created us in your own image. You filled us with your own life-giving Spirit. We thank you for the gift of life and for the blessings you bestow on us. We sing praise to you and worship you with our whole being.
